Retail Fit-Out for with AHT Cooling Systems

AHT Cooling Systems, a leading provider of innovative cooling and freezing solutions, Proton Built Environment partnered with Daikin UK to carry out retail fitouts for SPAR Service stations and local supermarkets across multiple sites in the UK. The average retail floor area for these projects ranged from 1,500 to 2,000m2. The goal was to provide an energy-efficient and sustainable cooling and heating system for the retail spaces, utilising AHT Cooling's SPI system with heat recovery, refrigerated shelf/island KINLEY & MONTREAL units, and Daikin 2-pipe cassette units for heating and cooling.

SPAR Service Stations and Supermarkets

Scope of Work:

Proton Built Environment and Daikin UK enlisted the expertise of a project team to deliver the retail fit-out projects. The scope of work included conducting initial Environmental Services thermal modelling for the proposed buildings, which included both retained and repurposed sites as well as new build constructions. The team was responsible for mechanical services design and coordination, including the integration of the heat recovery units, dry air coolers, and chiller, pipework sizing, hydraulic control, and BMS controls integration.

Solution:

AHT Cooling's SPI system with heat recovery was installed in the retail stores, connected to a Daikin Hydro Cube, a buffer tank with pumping stations, a waste heat unit, and Daikin air-cooled packaged chiller units. This setup allowed for simultaneous use of waste heat generated during cooling and deep-freezing, resulting in energy savings of up to 40-50% compared to conventional remote freezers. The combination of KINLEY overhead freezer and MONTREAL chest freezer units further contributed to the overall energy efficiency of the system.

The Daikin 2-pipe cassette units provided the heating and cooling required for the retail spaces, ensuring optimal comfort for customers and staff. The mechanical services design and coordination took into consideration the specific requirements of each site, including pipework sizing and hydraulic control, to ensure efficient and effective operation of the system. BMS controls integration allowed for centralised monitoring and control of the system, optimising energy usage and performance.

Energy Monitoring and System Operation:

Upon completion of the retail fit-out projects, AHT Cooling Systems and Proton Built Environment conducted energy monitoring and system operation analysis over seasonal periods to ensure that the energy savings projected during the design phase were being achieved across all sites. This monitoring and analysis helped to fine-tune the system and ensure ongoing energy efficiency and sustainability of the retail spaces.

Conclusion:

The retail fit-out projects for SPAR petrol stations and local supermarkets in the UK, carried out by Proton Built Environment and Daikin UK, resulted in energy-efficient and sustainable cooling and heating systems utilising AHT Cooling's SPI system with heat recovery and Daikin 2-pipe cassette units. The integration of the heat recovery units, dry air coolers, and chiller, along with pipework sizing, hydraulic control, and BMS controls integration, ensured optimal performance and energy savings. Ongoing energy monitoring and system operation analysis further ensured the sustainability of the systems across all sites.
